Inspirational Laotians: Nary Manivong
New York-Based Designer
"The self‐taught designer experienced a tumultuous childhood that ultimately left him homeless by his teenage years. His interest in fashion was sparked after finding a copy of Vogue, and a trip to New York at age 17 sealed his passion for design.
After relocating from Ohio to New York, Manivong debuted his eponymous ready‐to‐wear label in 2005 and quickly found himself on Women’s Wear Daily’s list of designers to watch. Soon thereafter, he was nominated by Fashion Group International for Rising Star Women’s Ready‐to‐Wear Awards in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, Manivong partnered with Ally Hilfiger to launch NAHM, a collection centered around unique interpretations of the shirtdress.
Today, Manivong turns his attention back to his namesake collection, a nod to his Laotian‐American roots. By balancing his feminine aesthetic with technical functionality, Manivong skillfully lends effortless attitude to otherwise classic silhouettes. The result is an eclectically refined selection of tailored separates and airy dresses that are as sophisticated as they are bold.
Manivong is also the subject of David Swajeski’s critically acclaimed documentary Dressed, which chronicles the young designer’s journey from the streets of Ohio to the tents of New York Fashion Week.” [x]

Finn Pain Scale
When nursing student Janell suggested how kids in her pediatric ward might better respond to Finn’s face on the traditional "Wong-Baker Facial Grimace Scale," Adventure Time character designer Matt Forsythe drew up these Finns, from “no pain” to “worst pain possible,” for her.
Thanks, Matt, and thank you, Janell. We hope these Finn faces make kids’ illnesses even a tiny bit more bearable.
Whenever I don’t post a comic when I’m supposed to, you can safely assume this is the reason why.
Meet Book, a FiftyThree collaboration with Moleskine. Bring your ideas to life.
Speaking of drawing apps, this looks like a pretty nice addition to Paper
I love using the Paper app and I love Moleskine notebooks. Best of both worlds!
